Advanced Rhythm Tap
Ages 12-Teen

Rhythm tap focuses on rhythms and intricate footwork, creating a percussion instrument out of the dancer’s feet. Originating in America, rhythm tap focuses on the acoustic rather than theaesthetic. In other words, the emphasis is upon what the dancer says with his or her sounds rather than the way the dancer looks when executing those sounds. The term ‘rhythm tap’ is used to differentiate between this expressive style of dance, which tends to be more grounded or banging; and the Broadway or show style of tap, which conversely is lighter and uses more calculated movements of the arms and legs. Rhythm tap, too, often incorporates choreographed movement of body parts other than the feet. However, it is the sounds that must always take centre stage. Just like jazz vocalists who add rhythms to music by scatting; rhythm tap dancers add their voice by “scatting” with their feet. Rhythm tap is a broad category that encompasses the hoofing styles of current stars such as Savion Glover and the late Gregory Hines and past masters such as Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Jimmy Slyde.
